About

MarionGPT is a contemporary art project where I find AI-generated images and create my own artworks inspired by their prompts; in essence attempting to "steal" AI's job.

I have no official stance on AI as a whole; it's constantly evolving as a tool and has proven itself useful in some industries (for example, advancing research in science and medicine). I'll admit I've used it myself. However, the grey (and most interesting) area for me is how over-reliance on generative AI creates a physiological divide between users and non-users.

This analogy accurately describes how I feel about generative AI in art - there's plenty of "craftspeople" (prompt writers) who can "craft" (write prompts for) great-looking images, but the lack of friction via this medium suggests many who adopt this technology will struggle to compare against the "designers/artists" of the world: people who can embrace friction, experimentation, and critically think about what and why they're creating.

We're also watching in real-time as generative AI widens the gap between high and low culture: luxury brands distance themselves from the computer-creations with human-made marketing, making it clear that AI is so not chic. So on a more optimistic note, this technological development seems to have sparked a renaissance that champions appreciation for human creativity.
